Composites if placed with exacting technique (rubber dam isolation and modern bonding agents) get as close as we have ever been able to restore the tooth to its original strength in the most conservative fashion. The composites are a very hard "plastic" that bonds (micromechanically fuse) to the tooth to hold the tooth together. Amalgams have multiple disadvantages. Amalgam is a metal which expands and contracts with hot, cold and biting. Therefore, with every meal the teeth are being weakened and over time and depending on the size of the filling the tooth becomes susceptible to fracturing. Amalgam also contains mercury which is a very toxic element. The literature is very unclear as to the amount of mercury that is released from amalgams and the long term effects on the entire body.

Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully cup over the portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line. Crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth. A dental crown in effect becomes the tooth's new outer surface.

A Bridge is a custom device anchored to neighboring teeth that replaces one or more missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side of the missing one are prepared as crowns to serve as abutments to hold the prosthetic (replacement) tooth in place. Crowns and bridges are most commonly prepared from high quality materials such as semiprecious or precious metals, porcelain, or a fused combination of the two. Aesthetics, function, and tissue compatibility are considered when selecting the material most suitable for you.

Full Mouth Rehabilitation involves restoring the teeth, bite, and muscles back to a natural looking and youthful feeling condition, thereby improving self esteem.
Using computerized technology and an artistic eye, full mouth restoration may be the answer to many problems, such as heat-sensitive teeth, sore jaw muscles, and recurring headaches.
Dental hygiene is an important part of how Dr Cave at Dayton Dental promotes oral care and oral disease prevention. The dental hygienists help plan the care of the teeth, by educating patients about their oral health. They provide information about preventive care—to ensure good dental health now and in the future. They give proper instruction on brushing and flossing your teeth, as well as information on nutrition and overall health habits. Your Dayton Dental hygienist will help screen for oral cancer and will take x-rays for the doctor’s analysis and diagnosis involving your teeth and surrounding tissues.
Brushing and flossing your teeth will help prevent bacterial plaque. However, in addition to your home care, you will need to have routine visits with the hygienists at Dayton Dental. For people with good healthy gums, these visits will be about every six months. If you have problems with your gums, called periodontal disease, you will need more frequent visits to the hygienist, usually every four months and sometimes as often as every three months. During these visits and with various techniques, the Dayton Dental hygienists will remove the plaque and calculus deposits that have built up on and around your teeth.
The best way to prevent periodontal disease, the leading cause of tooth loss, is to carefully follow a plan of good home dental care combined with regular visits to your dental hygienist at Dayton Dental. By the retention of your natural and beautiful teeth, you will receive the benefits of better overall health. Good oral hygiene doesn’t just protect your teeth and mouth. It lowers your risk of serious systemic disease, such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes complications and respiratory infections. Additionally, regular dental hygiene visits most likely will save you money. Dr Cave and his associates offer the very best dental hygiene available to their patients.
Implants are changing the way people live! With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh and enjoy life. Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. The implants are small titanium posts which are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration which occurs when teeth are missing.
